 WITH ADRIAN’S

“DAVID’S STONE”

On the beach, on 18 July 2010 (the late Nelson Mandela’s birthday), I picked up a perfectly round stone lying at my feet in the shallows in the sea sand. It was an extremely sad day in our family’s lives, but the moment I picked up that tiny round stone I knew that I had to hold on to and carry it close to my heart. It was a gift from my grandson, our David Warrior, Adrian Phillip Herrewyn (2), who passed away earlier that day. Adrian loved the story of David and Goliath and the family always told him this story. I did not know why at the time, but holding and feeling the texture of the tiny round stone instinctively made everything become real and alive in a strange way. I felt that I suddenly became part of an amazing and exciting life drama, the story of David, and that all will be well, “David’s Stone” made me feel safe and at peace. One week later I had a leather pouch made (sling shot) and ever since I carry “David’s Stone” around my neck and close to my heart.

 

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you: bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.”

(Proverbs 3:3)

 

Five years later in 2015, I continue to receive very clear confirmation through God’s Living Word, the Holy Spirit, visions and dreams that I must continue to hold and carry “David’s Stone” close to my heart. Ebenezer means “stone of help” (1 Samuel 7:1-2). “David’s Stone” is my “stone of help”. As I carry this stone, I have given “David’s Stone” to the Lord as a testimony to celebrate God’s grace in my life. It reminds me, and everyone who sees the tiny perfectly round stone and hears my testimony, that no matter your circumstances and the battles you have to fight, through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, He always gives us victory and He will continue to safeguard us against the Giants we have to face.

 Since we started “Reach Out Africa” 5 years ago the devil has tried to stop our mission calling in many ways and continues to place Giant obstacles in our way. We continue to have visa, work and residents permit problems, Blessing (the Tazz) had to get major repairs done to the engine and then I had to have major repairs done to myself, with back problems (currently still under Dr’s orders and treatment). Some days I feel frustrated, it feels like I am doing nothing and then I am surprised how the Lord continues to use me to reach out to others. The garage where Blessing had to be repaired belongs to Muslims. From the beginning all at the garage wanted to know how Blessing came to all the Kalahari sand and dust, which buy now has crept into all the little crevices and holes, and I have told all at the garage my story/testimony. One particular guy always asks me more about my travels and mission work. Then one day he asks me if he can help with donations of food and clothing, and off course I am very great full and pleased with that. He then asks me if I have something for him so that he can learn more about Jesus. Glory! I delivered the Jesus Film, Magdalena and Walking with Jesus DVD’s to him the other day and then a Hindu working at the same garage asked me if he can also have the Jesus Film - God is great!

The time away from the Kalahari San gives me the opportunity to do admin, some marketing and planning, read and study the Bible and it has strengthened my faith tremendously. As I now have time to listen to God and write the book” David’s Stone” (an ongoing testimony), I am confident and know that victory is ours. It has been a battle royal some days, we have our ups and downs, we get negatively influenced and with me when I have a lot of back-pain, I feel frustrated at not being able to do normal daily chores or even drive my car, it then seems so easy to just give up. Then the Lord speaks to me in dreams or sends messages of support via prayer partners or the Kalahari San. For 5 years now I have lived among the Kalahari San (for periods ranging 3 to 8 months at a time). Together with the San I have experienced how they live every day of their life in very, very tough conditions, with very little funds, very little or no food or water for up to 3 days, with persecution and spiritual battles from all sides. Despite everything against them, the sad and desperate history of this tribe; the San are very proud of their heritage and culture. Through faith the small group of San who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour, continue to be a catalyst and inspiration to all when they boldly face the many giants placed in there way, showing that through Jesus everything is not lost and through faith victory is always achieved.

A LIVING SACRIFICE and LOVE IN ACTION

With blind faith and one thing in my head, to visit and see how the Kalahari San live, we started this incredible journey in 2011 and with “Blessing” the Toyota Tazz packed to the rafters with camping gear, the Jesus and Magdalena Films, Broad & Narrow Way Posters, some Bibles, very little funds and much criticism, we set out to visit isolated San villages in the Kalahari. In three months we travelled from Cape Town to Johannesburg/Pretoria, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana and back to Cape Town.

From the outset the Devil tried to stop me and at times it was very difficult not to give up. In Namibia I hit a cow side on with “Blessing” and I had to replace the main headlight, the little money that I had was stolen/siphoned out of my bank account. In 2012 in Botswana i hit a steenbok head on at 130km, with major damage to the engine. Every time God sent amazing people to stand together and help me to get back on the road again. For over four years now we have travelled on the very bad and/or non existent roads and many repairs have been made with "blou draad en tang" or cable ties, we have delivered the Good news and Message of Christ using the Jesus Film/Magdalena, gave Solar Audio Bibles to the blind, provided food for the disabled, sick and very old, children spontaneously sing and dance around “Blessing” when we arrive in a village, water, food, clothing, compressors, large African cooking pots, chickens etc. have been transported (it was very close in having a coffin with deceased young man on the roof when the hearse broke down). Truly a Blessing, remarkable and reliable car.

We are in a constant battle, a Spiritual Warfare, and our faith is always tested by obstacles in our life. The more work we do in Jesus name and the more sacrifices we make, the more Satan gets aggravated, he tries to attach sickness to your body, lack to your finances, chaos to your home and confusion to your mind. Through the Lord Jesus Christ we can change all these tests into a testimony. On my four year quest to discover my purpose I have found that with God all thing are possible and that we are all created to be of service to others A Living sacrifice & Love in action - Reach Out and Touch Love - Creating, Working and Giving is Love made Visible - God Is Love!

 I am so great full for God's Living Word, the Bible, many prayer partners and Christian literature. Specifically books and teachings from the late and great Christian leader Dr Myles Munroe. I recommend these two books "Understanding Your Potential" and "Maximise Your Potential". I quote from these books:-

“Satan is our enemy. He wants to destroy the power of God within us so that God’s glory is not revealed in us. He’s out to destroy all we could be because he knows that those who become re-rooted in God have the ability to act like God, showing his nature and likeness. The key to releasing God’s power within you is living with Him in a relationship of obedience and submission. You are filled with heavenly wisdom, but you have to follow God’s program to benefit from it.  

We are all created because there is something God wants done that demands your presence on this planet. You were created with inherent abilities, talents, gifts, and inclinations to fulfil this purpose. The responsibility to use what God has stored within you is yours alone. Satan is the enemy of your created potential. The minute we have a good idea, the deceiver will send someone to criticize our dreams (or do something to hinder you) because he cannot permit us to accomplish our vision. As long as we are only dreaming, he is safe and he'll let us alone. When we begin to act on our dreams, he will hit us full force.

Potential is fulfilled only when it is given to others. God, who is Love, created man to fulfil his potential to love. Love is worthless until it is given away. It must have an object to be fulfilled. Therefore God needed something on which He could lavish his love, something that could understand and appreciate what He had to give. Of all God’s creatures, only men and women share God’s Spirit and, thus, can appreciate His love.

You are the object of God’s love. Because love can be fulfilled only when the receiver of love is like the giver, He created you like Himself, to be loved by Him and to love as He loves. Through giving love is released. Joy is found in participating in the pattern of giving, receiving, and giving again.”

Over 100,000 of the Kalahari San (Bushmen), still live in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. They are historically a nomadic people with a rich culture of oral storytelling. With the rise of national boundaries and land ownership, the majority of the San people are no longer able to be nomads as they are accustomed, and hence are struggling to learn new ways of employment and lifestyle. This has proven very difficult for the San, and many in their communities die from hunger or curable disease.

The Naro speaking San people have been a large priority to us at Davar, and first weighed heavily on our hearts in the early stages of producing the Audibible®. It was wonderful to hear this recent testimony about the blind Bushman hearing about the truth of the Word in his heart language. The Naro New Testament was the first audio Bible that we had the privilege of recording and distributing in 2012, and since then we have heard many stories about how God is speaking His hope and truth in “hopeless” places. But the need continues! Martin Erasmus, our friend and partner with Reach Out Africa, also shared this: “Your blessing of the Audibible helps so much with these remote and isolated people. We continue to pray for donations of Audibibles so that we can supply at least one to every family of about 15,000 Naro speaking San in Botswana.”

As with the Easter Friday Service and a meal for 600 people in New Xanagas in 2012, our planning to have a Christmas service and lunch for 800 people started months before the event. The minute we started working on this vision, Satan the deceiver, started sending critics and planted obstacles in our way to stop us from accomplishing our vision. 

One week before Christmas day we were concerned that we would not have enough funds to feed all, we did not have large pots to make the food, we were refused permission to use the community hall, we had power failures, constant rain and could not show the Jesus Film, it was very difficult to reach civilization with Blessing (the Toyota Tazz), to buy all the provisions and sort out Visas and Residents permits.

 Where God guides, He always provides.

He will never give you a vision - without pro-vision.

The rain had been pouring for many days and Blessing looked like a rally car as we tackled the muddy slippery roads to Ghanzi to meet with the Minister of Agriculture who donated P 1000 to buy a large goat for the Christmas lunch. At that stage we did not have enough funds to buy enough food for 800 people and decided to feed the sick, old and disabled first. While meeting with the Minister he donated 100 bibles and also gave us more funds – he gave us exactly the shortfall we needed to buy enough food for all on Christmas day. In New Xanagas the Campus Crusade Team from USA and Gaborone were ministering, handing out clothing and were preparing donated Christmas hampers for the children.

I had to find out the result of my residents permit application (handed in October 2013) and the fun started when we walked into the immigration office in Ghanzi. I was told that I had to leave the country that day (23 December) at midnight or I will be arrested. A very strict immigration officer did not want to know anything about an extension and told me that I had to wait in South Africa for the result of my application. We then landed up in the Directors office and eventually after the Chief and I explained our Christmas day arrangements and that the Minister was involved they called someone in head office and we managed to get 5 extra days for us to be able to complete the arrangements for the Christmas day service and lunch.

In New Xanagas the Campus Crusade for Christ team were very busy with all the arrangements for Christmas day. They were busy with the program for the youth, disabled and elderly, as I had to pack and store all my personal belongings. We received more good news that donated clothing from various Methodist Churches were dispatched from Cape Town to be delivered in New Xanagas on 27 December - the day I had to leave the country. We rushed around on 24 December, found pots in a neighbouring village and had to tackle the muddy rivers (roads) to fetch and load the pots into Blessing.

And now abide these three things “Faith, Hope and Love” – and the greatest of these is LOVE (1 Corinthians 13:13)

 

 On Christmas day we awoke at four, the men slaughtered the large goat and the woman started to prepare the food on fires in the pouring rain. In between the organising, buying extra oil, sugar, mayonnaise etc I was busy packing to leave the next day (26 December) for Gaborone to meet with an Immigration Agent to see if they can speed-up the approval of the residents permit. Just before the service started it stopped raining. We had a wonderful service and a meal for all in the Village. With the Chiefs approval we occupied the community hall and eventually the hall was packed and all had a blessed service led by the Pastor of the Enri Evangelical Church. The children received magunya (fat cakes) and sweet-aid before the service and at the end of the service were handed donated Christmas hampers. Lunch was taken to the sick, disabled and old at their homes and then the children were fed first before the rest of the village. People that did not receive food were intoxicated latecomers who arrived long after the food was finished.

Two days before Christmas we were still unsure if the Christmas service and lunch will be possible, but once again the Lord has shown that with Him, nothing is impossible and the San community received much more than they could ever imagine.

Consider reality:

  63% of the worlds population are illiterate and/or cannot read

 

  26 000 children are dying each and every day as a result of hunger or cure able disease

3 billion and more people are homeless and on the brink of starvation

Through the “Reach Out Africa” campaign and a network of many “Reach Out Africa” members we aim to start a movement of “Reach Out” teams/groups that will connect all the many private individuals, volunteers, professionals, religious & support organisations, charities, donors, fundraisers, NGO’s and NPO’s who help with economic, health, educational, social and spiritual up-liftment.  As a result of the isolation of many African communities/villages, many people live in utmost poverty, they do not even have the basics of water (on tap), or toilets or a house / sturdy structure to live in. With no infrastructure or large cities close by they need humanitarian assistance and guidance/training to enable them to acquire a lasting sustainable future and livelihood. Finances, funding, donations, teaching and training is needed for community projects that have a empowerment, educational, social, health or welfare impact (Early learning centres, feeding schemes, disability centres, orphanages, clinics and other projects). Your help to volunteer, visit, assist, teach or train in your specific field, profession or talent will be greatly appreciated.

Plan your next family holiday on an African Safari to an isolated African village.  You can start a “Reach Out” Safari holiday by deciding on a date (normally a school holiday), informing your family, friends, home group, school, church, business, club, community and all your contacts of your intended “Reach Out”. Inform all to collect much needed clothing household items, etc - see list below.  Inform all that on the “Reach Out Africa” Safari and during your stay in the community/village, they can assist the people with labour in building homes/shelters, teaching, training, visiting, helping the sick and old, playing & teaching sport/games, praying and worshipping etc. When you have decided on a date for your Safari please inform us and we will contact you to assist with finalising the finer details. We will also have a list of any members or groups that may accompany you and/or groups that can travel together. Depending on response and if you do receive many donations and lack storage space, the plan is that you inform us and we will arrange for collection/storage.

Spend your next family holiday with the “Kalahari San”. Camp among the San and experience their current lifestyle as well as be entertained in a traditional San village with stories of the rich heritage and culture, hunting & gathering stories. Learn about herbs, plants and food found in nature and how to make fire, while being entertained with traditional San music, singing and dancing.

All visitors and guests are welcome and are encouraged to walk through the village and visit, chat and interact with the people. By prior arrangement a guide / translator can be arranged to accompany you. Many younger residents speak English or Afrikaans but most speak Setswana, Naro or Herero.

Remember this is the heart of the Kalahari Desert. Take a torch/light with you at night and wear shoes. Be aware of scorpions at night and snakes in summer. When walking / hiking in surrounding bush do not wander of to far, as you can very easily get lost – stick to pathways/roads and use the telecom tower in the Village as a beacon. Although this is the Kalahari desert, it is not only desert sand but many trees, bushes and shrubs. Internet and cell phone reception is good in the village – many Bushman have cell phones. We have a manned Police Station in the village and medical assistance is available at the village clinic with a staff of two qualified Nurses (one in gap year studying to be a Doctor).

 

How to plan a “Reach Out” Kalahari San Safari?

As a result of the isolation of many Kalahari San Villages, the San live in utmost poverty. They urgently need humanitarian assistance and guidance/training to enable them to acquire a lasting sustainable future and livelihood. Your help to visit, assist, teach or train in your specific field, profession or talent will be greatly appreciated.

You can start a “Reach Out” by deciding on a date (normally a school holiday), informing your family, friends, home group, school, church, business, club, community and all your contacts of your intended “Reach Out”. Safari & Camping/Accommodation

Normally a bakkie or 4x4 vehicle and trailer is needed to travel in the Kalahari, but as the Village of New Xanagas is situated on a gravel road, 45 km from the tarred Trans Kalahari Highway, a normal motor vehicle and trailer will reach New Xanagas without any difficulty. The current campsite for “Reach Out” teams are on the New Xanagas secondary school ground (limited electricity/solar power), school ablutions (showers & flush toilets) and use of school kitchen facilities. No fridges or stoves are available and all cooking is done with gas or on a fire.

Passport and ID – South African citizens do not need a Visa to visit Botswana. Make sure your passport is in order and up to date. You are allowed a three months visit in Botswana on your passport.

Tent and camp equipment – gas/solar/battery cooking equipment/fridge, chairs, stretchers, sleeping bags/blankets, buckets for washing, water bottles, containers for water, cooking utensils, lamps, torch, matches, first aid kit…etc (plenty of fire wood available)

Personal / Clothing – pack summer and winter clothing, raincoat, hiking shoes, towels, hats, sun-block, sun glasses, etc

The Kalahari days can be very warm (40degrees) and the nights can be very cold (–6 degrees). Rainy season (August to February). Malaria - The area that we are in is not a high-risk malaria area therefore precautions are not needed. Many people however do take preventative medication as they tend to travel or tour further into tropical areas of Botswana. Ask your GP.

Food / Groceries / Toiletries – Bring your own drinking water and containers for keeping borehole water (washing-up / cooking). Bring mostly pre-packed instant food, cans/containers/long life milk/milk powder/condensed milk etc. Do not bring fresh vegetables, fruit or meat – as a result of the possible outbreak of fruit fly and foot-and-mouth disease these items will be confiscated on the Botswana border. We will assist you in buying fruit/vegetables and meat from Spar/Food wholesalers at the closest town, Ghanzi (160km from New Xanagas). Bring toothpaste, soaps, shampoo, toilet paper, refuse bags etc.   

 

Explore and Tour further

We always suggest that “Reach Out” families/teams/groups make the most of their visit and depending on time and budget, should take a round trip and visit The Okavango Delta, the Caprivi (Namibia), Chobe National Park & Forest Reserve, Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and or the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Travellers from Cape Town can enjoy many wonderful and interesting camping and tour opportunities en-route through Namibia as well.

Routes & Distance

As a result of the long distance, it is not possible to travel through to New Xanagas from South Africa in one day and particularly if there is a convoy of vehicles. We suggest that “Reach Out” groups/teams sleep over half way to New Xanagas and arrive on the second day of travel. There are many affordable camp sites/B&B’s/lodges/motels en route to Botswana and we suggest that teams/groups plan and book theire trip accordingly in advance.

Cape Town to New Xanagas (Via Namibia – Windhoek)

1^st day          Cape Town to Windhoek       = 1 450km (sleep over)

2^nd day          Windhoek to New Xanagas  =    390km

                                                     Total      = 1 840km

As you are travelling through Namibia you also only need a passport. You will pay

R 250 (250 Namibian dollar) road tax at the Namibia border per car/bakkie/trailer. You will also pay R 180 (180 Pula) road tax at Botswana border per car/bakkie/trailer.

JHB/PTA to New Xanagas (Via Zeerust - Skilpads gate border post)

1^st day          Jhb / Pta to Kang                     =     653km (sleep over) 

2^nd day         Kang to New Xanagas             =     386km

                                             Total                 = 1 039km

The people in most San Villages live in extreme poverty and many rely on government support and handouts. Your visit to their community means so much to them and to avoid misunderstandings and/or favouritism during your visit all visitors/teams/groups must adhere to well-organised and stipulated guidelines and procedures through the “Reach Out Africa” Office. When visiting in the village please do not give / hand out food / sweets / clothing to the community, many children will ask/beg. All handouts, donations and humanitarian aid must be well co-ordinated and all donations and offers of assistance must be done and offered through the “Reach Out Africa” office. During your stay specific “Reach Out” hand–out programs/days will be in place where visiting teams/groups will have an opportunity to assist all in the community.
